Are electric cars ever going to be cheaper than gas cars when buying upfront?

This is because EVs depreciate a lot compared to ICEVs. This in turn is caused by rapid increase in features in newer models. As soon as the longer ranged models came out, the shorter ranged EVs like the early LEAF plummeted in value, even though there is nothing wrong with the car itself.

Will they ever be cheaper when buying new?

I doubt it. They may be cheaper to make, but because they are cheaper to run they will always command a bit of a premium over gas cars. As time goes on and EVs become more popular, gas cars will either have their prices slashed or will simply go out of production.
