Are some legal recreational drugs more dangerous than illegal drugs?

Yeah, if this graph is accurate then definitely.

LSD and Psilocybin (Magic Mushrooms) are ranked as incredibly low dependence and incredibly low toxicity – in fact, they are the lowest for both.

Cannabis (Marijuana) has a moderate/low dependence, but still ranks pretty low for toxicity.

Those are three widely illegal drugs (though cannabis is becoming more accepted).

Now, find the legal ones:

Nicotine – surprise, surprise, it ranks high in terms of dependence and (arguably) lower than you might think for active dose/lethal dose (toxicity).

Caffeine is on-par with cannabis for dependency (honestly, I take both and I’d argue that caffeine has a higher dependency than cannabis. If I don’t get a coffee in the morning I’m ruined for the day).

Now, where’s Alcohol?

Where oh where is it?

Oh, there it is: It’s right up near the far end on the active/lethal dose scale, past MDMA, Mescaline, Caffeine, LSD, Psilocybin, Rohypnol, Ephedra, Ketamine, Nicotine, Pentobarbital, Cocaine, and Morphine – well shit, actually it appears Heroin is the only one that’s worse than Alcohol (at least according to this graph).

And it sits a little lower on the dependency rate, but still higher dependency than about 10 of the other substances.

So, are some legal recreational drugs more dangerous than illegal drugs? Yes, at least according to the graph above.
