Many of programmers are workaholics.
Most of workaholics don’t have social life. They just want to spend all of their available time to work because they like to work. It’s not true that they lose their social life, it’s because they prefer to work than to hangout with others.

I don’t know what you mean by “successful” in the question, because it depends on each person’s view. But for me, successful programmer is who create program to solve problems effectively, not the one who work more than 60 hours a week for typing code follow somebody’s design without knowing anything about what it’s for.

It’s true that you will spends lot of time to do programming but it’s not always like that. We focus on solving problem, not typing. It’s because programmer is not coder 🙂

If you lose your social life, it’s not because of your job, it’s because of your choices, your actions, and your mind.
