For crying out loud, agents are the people who intelligence officers recruit. Agents are not employees of the CIA, they are human intelligence (HUMINT) assets recruited by intelligence officers because their job or position in life provide them with either a lot of influence or access to valuable intelligence which the CIA wants.

As for CIA employees who are trained as assassins, the answer is yes some CIA employees are trained as assassins. Only a tiny fraction of the CIA is comprised of assassins. The part of the CIA which trains people as assassins is their black ops wing called the Special Activities Division (SAD) and within that the paramilitary Special Operations Group (SOG). The SAD/SOG is the CIA’s black ops paramilitary section which handles thing such as assassination, rendition and torture etc. The other section within the SAD is the Political Action Group (PAG) which handles black operations such as high-risk covert bribery and blackmailing of foreign government officials or diplomats etc.

Only SAD/SOG are trained as assassins. Even then, most of the SAD/SOG are selected from Tier 1 US military special forces units e.g. SFOD-D (Delta Force) and DEVGRU (SEAL Team Six) etc. This means that most of the black ops operatives within SAD/SOG were trained as assassins prior to joining the CIA. I imagine that the SAD/SOG only provides slightly more additional training for assassination. The former spec ops guys probably don’t have the spycraft/espionage training that they need in order to carry out some assassinations so the CIA will teach them this stuff. Carrying out assassinations with full military equipment during an airborne spec ops raid on a terrorist’s compound is different from carrying out an assassination in broad daylight in a major city. The Tier 1 spec ops guys need the additional training on how to kill people with poison laced umbrellas instead of shooting their way into a compound which they probably did in their old job.
