  1. Donald Trump successfully tacked towards “bonkers” because it was a greenfield positioning in the Republican primaries, and he occupied that space very well (the only person who challenged him on the bonkers turf was Ben Carson).

    Now, to win the general election, he’s trying to figure out how to thread the needle of tacking away from bonkers to pick up the mainstream vote without losing his loyalists in the bonkers camp.

    I would normally say that this is all part of an incredibly well-executed plan on his part, because it’s worked too well to be anything but, but when Trump points to an airplane overhead and claims that it’s from the Mexican military, well… it seems like his electoral success to date defies explanation.
