You need something far, far worse.

You see, nuclear power was a genie hiding in the lamp, and it took some brilliant minds to unleash that particular genie. But once it was out, there’s no going back. Everyone around the world now knew this technology existed, and that scared everyone. If the United States were the only ones to hold the keys, then they would be unstoppable. So the KGB and other intelligence agencies worked to get their hands on it. And they did. For a while, the United States was alone with this weapon, and then the Russians got it and China did too. Suddenly, the game changes.

Wars before could have been fought with thousands of troops across entire theaters of the globe, but now all it would take to level a city was a weapon that could be loaded on one aircraft or fired from a missile and boom, it’s over. And the guys in each capital knew that was the case, so they kept the damned things pointed at each other, twitching, waiting for the other to make a move. This lasted from 1947 to 1991, and it still happens today. The weapons are just too powerful to let go of because the second you take your finger off the trigger, the other side can fire with impunity and you’ve just lost the game.

So what would make nuclear weapons no longer worth it?

Something worse.

And we made it.

The hydrogen bomb took the technology of the atomic bomb to the next level, becoming more powerful than ever. Smaller warheads could take on bigger targets, and they could be packed in clusters inside missile warheads to take out multiple cities per missile. Did that stop the escalation? No. It just meant each side now needed the next tier of mass destruction. They even began to branch out, looking at biological, chemical, viral weapons that could take out millions of people without going nuclear. The second they went nuclear, the war was already over, they just weren’t dead yet.

The only way you’ll ever rid the planet earth of all nuclear weapons is to create a weapon that makes the hydrogen bomb appear weak. Something that would shatter the record of the Tzar Bomba’s 50 megaton warhead and be convenient enough you can pack it in a regular missile case. When that happens, you’ll just be trading one technology for another, and then the question becomes how do we take this new superweapon off the table, and the answer will be the same each time. You make a deadlier weapon.
