How many ballistic missiles would be enough for Pakistan to meet its defense needs?

Pakistan is a country with very strategic geographical location. It s neighbours are India, Afghanistan, China, and Iran. Pakistan has friendly relations with China and Iran. Afghanistan is a poor country with no offensive capability to speak off. That leaves India.

There is no way India will risk conflict by crossing International Border or Line of Control. So only risk to Pakistani state is if India retaliates against a terror strike conducted by Pakistan supported militant group like Let, JeM etc.

If Pakistan and India have talks and they accept Line of Control as International Border, this issue will resolve and Pakistan will not need any ballistic missiles. This will also require Pakistan to stop supporting anti India groups and develop trade with India. Pakistan can instead get security guarantee from US or China against any breach of agreement. It will free up both India and Pakistan to move forward on economic front. This means Pakistan does not need even a single ballistic missile.

However, above is unlikely scenario so i would hazard a guess. I think Pakistan would need atleast half the number of missiles what India has to be a credible defence in case of conflict with India. Some of these missiles will get stopped by indian Imissile defence shield but Pakistan need to be able to saturate Indian air defence to have some missile pass through successfully. I would say 500 to 1000 would be good number.

Pakistan will also need to improve its air defence capabilities against aircraft, ballistic and cruise missiles and UAVs otherwise it will be a sitting duck against various Indian missiles in case of conflict.
