Many many years ago when i first started working as a Funeral Director and was on call overnight.

I was called to a local hospital at about 2am to pick up a deceased person from their room.

Being early morning, there was relatively very little staff, the lights had been dimmed in the corridors and the actual room light the deceased was in had been turned off.

At this stage my offsider went looking for a nurse to sign off paperwork and this left me to enter the dark room by myself and start the process of strapping and covering the deceased.

As i started to strap the gentleman, i firstly had to cover him with his sheet, this was a normal process where we would take the bottom sheet and wrap the deceased so that it covered them prior to lifting them onto our gurney.

Instead of my usual walk around and folding the sheet over the body, i leant across the deceased chest and reached for the edge of the sheet.

As i did this, the air that had accumulated in the lungs expelled and a rattling groan came from the mouth of the deceased.

I got so scared, i ran into the corridor and just waited for my offsider to turn up.

I didnt have to explain anything to my offsider as i think the look of terror on my face said it all.
