Many people find it uncomfortable or are otherwise poorly prepared to become a manipulative asshole, and many drugs can aid in this skill set.

People do recreational drugs because they are…well…recreational! The benefits are often enhanced fun, mind-blowing contemplation, and the discovery that it doesn’t matter if you can’t dance, you want to boogie! And that anything salty or sweet can be the most amazing flavour, ever.

I’m a recovering addict and I believe that I can’t ingest any recreational drugs, including alcohol. But there are many people who can enjoy alcohol, marijuana, mushrooms, E, and probably a few more drugs I can’t think of but that are relatively safe in sociable amounts and add to the pleasures of recreational time.

I still miss concerts while high (amazing music experience) and, to a lesser extent, certain types of movies. Ice cream has never tasted as delicious as it did while stoned on marijuana. Hiking in the mountains is still, pardon the pun, a peak experience–but it used to be much more mind-blowing on hallucinogens.

The question asked about the benefits, not the many downsides, hence my “positive” response.
