In a handmade carpet the material and fineness are critical. A top quality carpet will be made of silk while wool ones can have a soft wool or more cheaply a coarse one. The fineness is also in the number of knots per square inch. Ideally there will be too many to count for example 35 x 35 is not unknown in a square inch. The main advantage in a handmade carpet is in it’s uniqueness. The weaver can make any number of significant or minute variations which the industrial manufacturer will duplicate many many times, ie make identical copies. Finally I have noticed hand made carpets are better finished, for example imagine a carpet on a loom having the base material much bigger than the woven area. The horizontal threads are called the weft and these should be long and sewn back in to make a strong edge. A cheap carpet will cut most of these off short thereby allowing them to come loose and fray.
