  1. If you’re talking about the English aristocracy then the first rule is that everyone knows everyone else. It’s a pretty closed club. Having the right background, schooling, accent and the finances to support your position are also required to a greater or lesser degree.

    The upper class and middle classes have both nuanced shibboleths and behavioural etiquette. Etiquette is what allows you to co-exist on their territory and can be mastered by dint of courteous attention. The more rarified the social rank the more likely that the former rules will evade anyone who hasn’t assimilated them from their very earliest days: which on a basic level is the point.
