Do you live in an area with cold winters? If the rug is not too big to handle, you can use snow to clean the rug.

Wait for a cold day and fresh snow. Powder snow is best. Leave the rug chilling outside for a half hour. Lay the rug face down on the snow, then beat it with something like a broom or rake, or walk over it. You want to knock the dirt out and work snow into the pile.

Turn the rug over onto a new section of snow and repeat the beating and walking.

Shake and sweep the snow off the rug before you bring the rug back inside.
