What could cause the US government to collapse?

We have a strong love of our rules. The Constitution. The checks and balances. The federalism. The Supreme Court. We sure do love our rules.

It will probably be our undoing someday. Here is the first way: a lot of deaths in one of our branches of government, destroying separation of powers. The U.S. Government Still Isn’t Ready for a Catastrophic Terror Attack

Other things:

Defaulting on our debt. This would put our financial sector in a tailspin like its never known before. Everyone will be blaming everyone. Then the president might step in and do power usurpation to figure stuff out. Then everyone will decide whether he usurped too much. You know there is a problem when someone starts talking about postponing elections. Note: defaulting on our debt will happen if we do not raise the debt ceiling in time everytime.
I touched on this in the last bullet point but dictatorship. Our president has a ridiculous amount of power and it has only been growing over time (not Obama’s fault btw). What happened in Rome could happen to us: someone gets a lot of power and the Congress could be mostly just a rubber stamp. Again, we would have to get rid of free and fair elections for this to work.
Military coup. Similar to the previous point, but a different source. Very important to mention because this happens in many countries around the world in a historically regular basis. Unlikely but possible.

Hope this helps!
