I had a secondhand, rather elderly Jaguar Mark 1 car. For some reason, I had a feeling there was a fault with the brakes, although I couldn’t prove it. It went in for it’s annual MOT and I mentioned it at the time and asked them to check the brakes especially “Nothing wrong with them “ I was told. A few weeks later I took it into a local garage that I hadn’t used before and had hardly got home before I received a rather excited call asking me to go back as they had something to show me.

He showed me that the brake on the left front wheel was completely rusted and he thought could not have worked for at least 6 months and probably much longer than that.

What was even more of a mystery was that this could be seen just by lifting the bonnet – no need to have it up on jacks and so on. How it could have been missed, no one could explain – let alone passed for a Ministry of Transport Test (MOT) which was a legal requirement and could only be done by a specially inspected and licenced garage.
