It took me a while to work out what American football was about, because it has very different values to most European teams sports. What gets European sports fans excited is when a game has great flow, so football teams with amazing passing games, rugby teams who are able to play phase after phase, that is what we want to see. When teams win because they are good at set plays, rather than great displays of athleticism and skill, we feel a little cheated.

It wasn’t until I realised that American football is all set plays that things which had frustrated me, such as the stop start nature of the game began to make sense. I still couldn’t say that I enjoy it but it makes more sense to me now, thinking of it as chess with people rather than crap Rugby.

I think of all the North American sports Basketball has the best flow, which is why it is easily the most popular North American sport in Europe.
