What does "Gong Hei Fat Choy" mean?

“Gong Hei Fat Choy” is the transliteration of the Chinese phrase 恭喜發財 when spoken in Cantonese. It is a Chinese New Year greeting meaning “Wishing you prosperity”. In Mandarin it is “Gong Xi Fa Cai” – or 恭喜发财 in simplified Chinese. 恭喜 (Gung hei) means Congratulations (or in this case, Wishing you) and 發財 (fatt choy) means to get rich (or to prosper).

If you are a child, you might add 紅包拿來 (“Hung pau naa loi” in Cantonese or “Hong bao na lai” in Mandarin – meaning, please hand over the red packet) after that phrase. 🙂

nb. 紅包 (Red packet) are small red envelopes with money in them which are given out to children during Chinese New Year. (Much like otoshidama – お年玉 – in Japan)
