It is a numeric code that, when entered upon the phone’s request and having inserted a new SIM into the phone; will allow the SIM, to establish the proper communications link to the cellular network and thus provide you services such as phone service, data link (3G or 4G connectivity) and maybe others.

This is used when cellular phone companies want you to stay with them as a customer, somewhat forcefully, therefore they LOCK the phones as to only allow their own SIMS to be used in that phone; if you insert a SIM from another company, it usually would ask for the unlock code. If you don’t have it do NOT enter guessing codes many times, as it is also common for the whole phone hardware to block itself for ever upon many unsuccessful attempts entering unlock codes.
