When you just look at the AK’s performance, there ‘s nothing impressive about this weapon.

It’s quite heavy which is a big minus for every military rifle, it’s accuracy is bad and the 7.62×39 mm round isn’t the most powerful one either.

Many people say that the AK’s biggest plus is that it’s extremely reliable and easy to handle. This is indeed true, but there are many other battle rifles around which have the same characteristics.

What I liked about the Kalashnikov (I carried it with me in two wars) were two other things:

The AK is very well balanced. You can carry it with only one hand. This helps you while you’re shooting and it’s also a big plus when you carry it over long distances because you don’t feel its weight so much.
It’s an extremely compact weapon, especially the versions with a folding stock. This is an advantage when you are in a vehicle (armored infantry) or fight in an urban environment.
Its compactness made it a multipurpose weapon for all kinds of soldiers. It’s good for infantry (although not ideal), but also for logistics, military police, and many other units. You only need one weapon for all the different jobs.

If you are taking all the AK’s different versions and derivatives into account (marksman rifles, light machine guns, submachine guns, etc), it’s the most versatile weapon that has ever been produced.

This is what makes it unique.
