In the late 90’s I was flying to Denver, I seem to remember on American, routine flight, nice weather, window seat, right side, two seats in my row. my seat mate was a pleasant lady, we made small talk then went about our own business. About half way to Denver the plane started shaking violently, not turbulence shaking mind you, this was “Oh Crap” type shaking. The lady beside me screamed, grabbed my arm and asked what’s happening. Good question I thought! Sitting back of the wing I had a good view of its trailing edge. We were air braking, a large section of the wing is moved up causing rapid loss of air speed. I turned and Said “we’re air braking’, turning back to the window just in time to see a black airliner going the opposite direction, A black jet airliner. And it was Damned close. Shortly the Captain came over the PA saying sorry but we had to reduce air speed rapidly and that we were air braking. I have no clue if anyone else saw the other jet, I only know what I saw. I think it’s called, Loss of separation. when two planes are that close.

That, was the single most interesting event I’ve had while flying, the second most interesting, well that’s another story.
