  1. CAM generally stands for Computer Aided Manufacturing and some time refers to Computer Aided Machining.

    Initially when CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) machine was introduced the programming was done manually with the help of G codes and ISO coding system directly on the controller of the machine.

    As technology gets advanced high-end CAD software introduced which generates free form surfaces quietly easily. To generate the machining programmes of those freeform surfaces with the help of G codes is quite difficult and near to impossible, which leads to integrate the CAM software with CAD.
