Infection requires contact with infected body fluids. With basic precautions and good public education the risk is very low. The outbreak in West Africa killed so many because there had been civil war in the afflicted countries so health professionals were not trusted. The traditional funeral rituals involved the relatives washing the dead body, which when someone has died of a haemorrhagic fever is almost certain to spread infection.

The Ebola disease is bad but the epidemic was made orders of magnitude worse by poverty, lack of health care infrastructure and failure to educate the population about the dangers.
