First and foremost is safety. The crew is trained to evacuate the plane in less than 90 seconds. They are also trained in emergency medical (how to administer oxygen, what to do in the case of a diabetic coma, CPR, etc.) They are responsible for making sure that all the FAA regulations on board are being followed, e.g. making sure that your luggage is stowed properly, you are wearing your seatbelt, the seatbacks and tray tables are properly positioned for take off and landing. They are also the eyes and ears of the cockpit crew and are ready to communicate anything they see that might endanger the aircraft or the passengers. After that, the are responsible for the comfort of the passengers in terms of getting them beverages, food if it is provided etc. Most of them take their jobs very seriously and you should listen to them when they perform the pre-flight announcements. It could save your life if you know where your exits are both in front and in back of you. Leaving a bag at your feet might seem like a silly thing to be worried about, but in the event of a forced evacuation, the visibility might not be good and someone could die because they trip over your bag when they are trying to get out of a smoke-filled cabin. You never know where you might be able to exit – it might even be a crack in the fuselage. When they ask you to do something, just smile and do it – they are doing their jobs and it is always in your best interests.
