    Novel means “new.”

A coronavirus is not only the new pandemic at our hands. It also includes a myriad of other viruses. The coronaviruses are an entirely family of viruses, not just one. Among these viruses are some dangerous ones like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), but it also includes non-dangerous viruses such as the ones that cause the common cold.

Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning that they spread from other animals to humans. Some coronaviruses never infect humans. The novel coronavirus, also called COVID-19, was one of those.

It is thought that the COVID-19 virus originated in Wuhan, China in a market that sold bat meat. Bats are carriers of the COVID-19 virus and as such, the first human likely became infected that way.

The COVID-19 virus is called novel because it is a new virus that has never infected humans before. Ergo, it doesn’t have a name yet.
