Non – combat…… May 2003 AdDwar Iraq, FOB Arrow. Been there about two days ( four weeks in country) and I was filling up generators with JP8. My platoon Sergeant was out checking shelters making sure each team was on point. We would be locking up the shelters for the night and a few other NCOs and troops were buttoning up loose ends. As I oust the cap on the last can of fuel I look up and see most of my section starting to all gather towards the area of trees in between two shelters. Everyone is yelling and whooping, so I start to run as fast as I can towards them. As I get close I see what everyone is yelling at. A pack of 5–7 wild dogs had for some reason turned on one dog in particular. (Yes wild dogs roamed Iraq, at least in 2003 , in packs. Sometimes 15 deep, or more) They were ripping him to shreds. The dogs ignored our yelling and continued , so my platoon Sgt picks up a stone and throws it at the pack. Next we all pick up bricks, stones, blocks and start to get the pack off the one dog. We were able to scare them off but the solo dog was a mess. All sorts of body parts missing, blood everywhere. He died in seconds. We dug a grave for him right there. Every time I filled generators I thought of that dog. ………… Before anyone asks, we would have gotten in deep shit over our heads if we had chambered a round just to shoot a dog on the FOB.
