I was on a flight to Delhi and over Myanmar it was really turbulent and the lady beside me, a woman in her 40s, started getting agitated. Eventually she asked could she hold my hand and closed her eyes until we got through that section.

I then got talking to her and she told me she had visited her brother in Jakarta trying to get him to return home, but he had done well and was a partner in a major accounting firm. She had bought a lot of minor electrical and knowing what Indian customs were like with returning residents I offered to carry these through to avoid taxes.

Anyway I ended up waiting outside the airport for her, then noticed just one remaining group waiting for someone and I asked if that person was Ms X. They said yes I left the goods and my local number. They called the office next morning and insisted that on my way back to the airport that I stop off and visit their house. They were clearly very wealthy. Every one of the family were accountants! When I was there I was told that the lady passenger had a great fear of flying because she had witnessed a terrible airplane crash which was quite near their house. They lived close to the airport.

So many years go by.

I then carried out a study for an accounting and consulting firm in Hong Kong and presented the findings to the team headed up by this Indian guy. We got on well and he told me he had started his career with the firm in Indonesia. I put two and two together and asked him was his sister called Ms. X? Now that name was a family pet name so only known to close friends and family. He nearly fell off his seat. He told me his sister had told everyone about me and here we were years and world’s away reconnecting. Small world?
