What little-known details are usually left out when talking about the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

A little detail that I picked up from a book I read a while back, from the perspective of someone on board one of the planes … that as they sped away from the drop point (wearing safety equipment, goggles, etc.) that when the light of the blast overtook them it flooded the plane with an iridescent purple glow … I mean, just imagine that … you’re wearing safety goggles, flying in such a manner as to maximize the amount of aircraft body between the blast and crew, your back to the light, and yet it still clearly registers … that underscores the amount of energy released in that instant.

Thanks for the A2A.
