I had a girl in my PE class named Cindy Gale. She had her locker right next to mine. During class one morning she told us that she had just gotten engaged to her boyfriend, Wayne. She showed us her engagement ring. We were seniors, and she was the first one of us to get engaged. They were planning to get married as soon as they graduated. We were all really excited.

I had known Wayne since 2nd grade. He was in the auto shop class. He had been working on an old truck. I think he had just replaced the motor or something and hadn’t put the hood back on the truck. He had just gotten it running and wanted to take it out at lunch to see how it ran. Of course, he asked Cindy to come with him.

The street that ran past the side of our high school was on a steep hill. It ran right past the auto shop. So, when lunch break came, Wayne and Cindy started driving the truck up and down the hill. He was revving the engine, kind of showing off for the rest of us standing outside watching. On his third trip down the hill, his foot slipped and he lost control of the truck. The truck ran into a telephone pole and Cindy flew through the windshield and landed on the motor.

Within a couple of minutes, the fire Dept and an ambulance were there. There was blood everywhere. The principal and most of the teachers were outside ushering all of us away from the scene. The last thing I remember seeing was Wayne sitting on the curb with his head in his hands crying. A couple of hours later, the office announced that Cindy had died on her way to the hospital.
