A2A: What’s the most shocking thing you found in your spouses possessions?

We were military and moved around a lot. In Florida alone, we moved 3 times in 8 years. There were boxes we kept with our mementos… hoping to eventually unpack them after our final move. That move came when my husband retired in 2008. We decided to settle down in Texas and bought our forever home. We unpacked our memento boxes and laughed at the contents. They were like time capsules. Sadly, many of the items with paper were forever damaged with mold. The constant moisture in Florida destroyed journals, books, notes, and love letters. It was a bummer. There was one book, though, that saddened my husband. I could see his heart drop and he flipped through the fragile pages full of handwritten margin notes, and highlighted lines. It was the first Bible he received. He got it from a friend after his brother had been murdered. They prayed together with it. He put it in the box to keep it safe. Instead, it was ruined… full of mold. He put it aside on a counter. He couldn’t throw it away.

It was a cheap Bible with a dark blue cover. There was a personal inscription in it from his friend. There was nothing special about it but it was important to him. He mourned it for a long time. Eventually he stopped looking at it and it seemed to just blend into the shelf, disappearing. So… I made it disappear. I took it and held onto it to see if he noticed. He didn’t.

I found a special man online and contacted him. He is a professional book restorer. I didn’t know that was a thing. I called him and described the book and its condition. He usually doesn’t work on projects like this, but he made an exception. I sent him the book and he took a few months to work on it. He created a new cover for it and personalized it with my husbands name in the lower right corner. He returned the book to me.

I was excited to receive it back. Hubby still had no idea it was ever gone. Excited, I just handed him the book, still in the shipping box. He had no idea what it was until he opened it. His margin notes are still there. The highlighted passages still highlighted. The mold… gone.

I was shocked that my husband had decided to keep the old, mold infested Bible. I’m happy that he now reads it every night… and the mold is still gone.
