most days she would arrange for me to stay with a family member while she worked, but occasionally that option was not available. On those nights, she did what she had to. She’d have a deep conversation with me about safety and being responsibility, she’d lock all the doors, and she’d trust that I’d do the right thing. I was a good kid, and she knew that.

On one of those nights, at about four in the morning, I was in a deep sleep, dreaming about being a professional wrestler or an NBA star as I normally did. In a split second, I was thrust back into a violent, and dazing reality. All I could see were bright lights, all I could smell was burning rubber, all I could hear was rev of a diesel engine. I jumped out of bed and crawled back a few feet before realizing what had happened. A white pick up truck was sitting in the middle of my bedroom and the man driving it was not letting off its gas pedal.

I screamed for help and neighbors started filling the street. I heard murmuring between the crowd and distant interactions with police dispatch. The hours following were filled with strangers asking questions I didn’t have answers for and me lying about the ones I did. I was afraid that the man might be hurt. I was afraid that my mom might be in trouble. I was afraid that things wouldn’t remain the same.

Truth be told, everyone involved got lucky. The man in the pickup truck was epileptic. He had an unfortunately timed seizure but would turn out to be okay. The cops didn’t come back and ask any more questions. I got to take the day off of school, and my mom and I went for pancakes.
