  1. I used to have a boss, Steve, who was a real piece of work. Midway through the year, he cancelled a project of mine, saying the company was “going in another direction.” My team carried out the replacement project perfectly. Then at the end of the year, he denied me my bonus on the grounds that I hadn’t achieved my written objectives for the year, specifically the project he cancelled. I remember how he chuckled at the meeting. “I have never seen you looking so speechless.”

He had so much fun screwing over me, the development director, that he decided to stretch out, and he summarily fired the IT admin. Mistake. There was nothing I could do but quit. The IT admin had access to everyone’s emails. Steve’s wife received, anonymously, copies of emails between Steve and a number of young women, negotiating schedules and prices.
