  1. It is human nature and ego to focus on one’s own present circumstances as exceptional. But right now the US is not in a historically unstable point. There have been numerous periods in US history with considerably greater social unrest and economic instability than right now. Here in 2016 it is all pretty much business as usual.

The Panic of 1785, the 1812 Recession and subsequent War of 1812, the Depression following the war, the long Recession starting in 1839, the slave revolts and abolitionist unrest, the pre-Civil War unrest, the Civil War, the Draft Riots, the Railroad Riots, the Panic of 1873 and the Long Depression, early 20th century labor and anarchist unrest, World War I, the Red Summer of 1919, the Great Depression, World War II, the Civil Rights era riots and unrest, the 1973 OPEC sparked recession, the 1979 Energy Crisis, and the recent Great Recession of 2008. All bigger crisis to name just a few.

And guess what? During all of those times of instability, war and unrest, the US never collapsed. Except for the Civil War, it never even came close to collapse. And even that horrible war, in which the political and social conditions leading up to it were far worse than anything today, could not bring the US low.

Right now we are enjoying the most peaceful and war free period in human history by a large margin. US life expectancy has doubled in the past century. People are better educated, healthier, and better fed than at any time in history. Violent crime has decreased rapidly. Americans have access to greater luxury and security than at any time in history. And they have plentiful cable television and Xbox.

If all of the greater instability, war, and economic crisis of the 19th and 20th century could not come close to collapsing the United States, it is doubtful the period of comparative calm and economic stability we are enjoying now will do so.

Yes, the United States may collapse some day. Though such a fate for nations is really quite rare. Much more likely it will slowly be surpassed by more populous nations, and take a few steps down in global prominence and hegemony. But such things are long off. Economic and demographic trends indicate the United States is many decades from being surpassed, and nothing precipitating a collapse is imminent. You can keep your V-8 Interceptor primed, your shoulder pads polished and your bug out baggies ready if it makes you happy, but there is no evidence you’ll need any of it any time soon for some sort of Mad Max apocalypse.
