There are so many specialties that I have a quirky approach. I would recommend a strong broad education in both hardware, software and data. Take courses in verbal and written communication as well as project management.

Really notice what lights you up and makes you want to go into the lab and keep working. What class do you absolutely dread?

This field is incredibly dynamic and one of the reasons I stayed in it is the high rate of change. If you select an area that you don’t like and doesn’t interest you it will be difficult to keep up with the changes. You turn into one of those people who gets layed off because they didn’t keep up.

It’s a trap to think there is a best field in technology. I was a natural at call center/help desk and computer security. If I had forced myself to be a software engineer I would not have been very good. The opposite my be true for you. It’s a big field so find your niche.
