Which is the best island to visit, Koh Phi Phi or Koh Samui?

I’ve been on both islands. The two islands both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Koh Phi Phi is a small beautiful party island with no cars. Anywhere you go, you either walk or take a boat. The night is noisy. There are great bars to go to and if you want to party with your friends, it’s a perfect place. However, I didn’t like the beaches, as they have sharp rocks underwater. I also didn’t see any old buildings. The most common food is pizza. Seriously, this place is for party and more party, just that. And alcoholic boat trips if you like.

Koh Samui is much bigger and more varied. You could party, or see Thai boxing, or dive, or any of the other possibilities. The island is not the crazy party place that Koh Phi Phi is. The beaches are perfect. Distances on the island are much bigger, and taxis are more expensive than those in the cities. Not the whole island is beautiful, but many beautiful places are scattered around the island. There are some cultural places to visit and delicious Thai food to be eaten.

Koh Samui is a better place to go to as a solo traveler, due to the attitude of the other travelers. Koh Phi Phi is visited by groups of friends, and travelers are relatively unwilling to group up with strangers. As a partying group of friends, go to Koh Phi Phi. You’ll love it.

EDIT: I’m reminded that there were families on Koh Phi Phi, while I was there. There are probably family activities that I overlook, and I’m most likely highly biased by staying in youth hostels. A visit on the island by a married couple might indeed be much more enjoyable than I imagine based on my experiences. I would personally be disturbed by the abundance of party goers, but the incredible beauty of the island might compensate that. My advice for David and his wife to go to Koh Samui instead still stands, but advice from families that were in Koh Phi Phi might be valuable indeed.
