  1. It depends what kind of student you are, what you are looking for in a university and what are your future prospects after graduation. I’ll break it down in these points:

    • Faculty:
      • ITU is attracting a lot of PhDs that are coming back to Pakistan after completing their studies abroad because of very attractive salary and benefits packages.
      • FAST-NU which had 24 faculty members in the CS department (including around 4 PhDs) in 2014 has recently increased its faculty count to 37 (increasing the number of PhDs to 13) now.
      • Verdict: Although ITU might have more qualified faculty on paper, the experience FAST-NU’s faculty has of creating individuals with high technical skills over the past years makes them a more reliable choice.
    • Job Placements:
      • There is not much to compare here, the number of years FAST has been present in the CS industry as the only institute producing CS professionals makes its graduates an obvious choice in the industry. Majority of the companies doing international standard work consider fresh graduates of FAST a very safe option to rely upon. People in a lot of senior positions through out the industry are alumni of FAST and there is a natural inclination and belief in their Alma Mater. So, if you are graduating from FAST with a reasonable CGPA (good grades in CS core courses specifically), you are getting a good job, no doubt about that. People from FAST are equally making their impression in the international industry with placements in Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon. Unverified information says there are around 110 FASTians working in Microsoft currently.
    • Management and Facilities:
      • ITU: Considering the number of students and the state of the art campus ITU has, management of students of should not be an issue at ITU. ITU being the focus of Punjab Government and their plan of building a new campus indicate that it is going to have close to world class facilities including class rooms, libraries, labs and sports and recreation.
      • FAST: The CS department of FAST NU Lahore inducted around 400 students in the 2016 batch. Considering the size of the campus and available facilities there is a scarcity of both resources and management personal. The problem of student course registration was a real pain in the ass of students for two three academic terms but the department HOD has now identified the problem and the situation is much better, it is expected to get even better in future as work is underway on automating major chunks of course registration management work. The situation of labs, classrooms and other facilities has also improved recently. Around 450 computers with Intel i5 3rd gen processors having 8 GB RAM have been installed in 10 labs (including general use, course and language labs). Air conditioning in class rooms and labs is also better now.
      • Verdict: ITU being a government backed university will always have access to more funds and better facilities however FAST has a lot of limitations including financial issues and a small overcrowded campus. ITU wins in this department but its up to you that how much important it is for you to have a luxurious classroom or a better learning environment.
    • Students and Learning Environment:
      • ITU: ITU is still emerging on the scene of CS and there are not a lot of ITU graduates around in the industry to actually leave an impression of their university, so a lot of students still do not have ITU as their first priority.
      • FAST: CS from FAST has always been famous for its high merit and how difficult it is to get admission in the undergraduate program. These high standards result in the induction of only a small percentage of the highly competent people that apply for the test. All these competent people put together in one batch along with the university’s policy of not letting anyone just glide through the program without actually learning the concrete concepts turns it into a very competent environment. 60% of the students from each batch graduate on time, the remaining believes it is better to suffer here than to suffer on your job or higher studies. So if you are getting in you are not getting out unless you are competent enough for the industry.
      • Verdict: The kind of competitive environment you’ll get at FAST you’ll not get at any other CS university.
    • Research Opportunities and Higher Studies:
      • ITU: With around 7 8 research labs established and looked after by professors who have extensive research experience ITU is a heaven for having research opportunities. These labs work in collaboration with foreign institutes opening up higher education opportunities for their students, abroad.
      • FAST: One of the most important point FAST Lahore is missing is the absence of any reasonable research facilities. The current HOD realizes the situation and plenty of work has been done to improve the situation, work is underway to establish Robotics, Big Data and iot labs but there is still a long way to go. The presence of more PhDs in the faculty will act as a catalyst to improve research opportunities. University is also paying attention towards arranging seminars, sessions and meetings to assist students regarding higher education opportunities.

I have tried to explain a lot of points in detail, hope you can make some sense out of it.
Edit: A student from ITU has some points to add, please check out his comment also.

  2. We regularly recruit people from various universities every year. Firstly, as an employer we really value applicant’s abiity to lear and efforts made to learn beyond whats taught in class. This means, indivisual’s hardwork and passion for programming and CS matters more then university.
However, industry really value FAST better ( because of long history ) however ITU and Comsats are coping up fast. I must mention that i were pleasantly surprised at how well Comsat students performed in our recruitment drive and now we regularly visit Comsat for recruitment drives. I haven’t had opportunity to interact with graduate of ITU but i know their faculty is very good.
