That Poland exchanged one brutal conqueror (Germany 1939–1945) for another (Soviet Russia 1945-1989). Britain had joined the war for the defense of Poland, but in reckoning, Churchill had to choose between wresting either Poland or Greece from under Stalin’s boot; he chose Greece.
