Pan Singh was an Indian soldier and an athlete. His only crime was that he took the law in his own hands, when he saw that there was no way the law would help him.

An international steeplechase runner, Pan Singh has even represented India in 1958 Commonwealth games in the sport. His record of 3000m steeplechase (9 minutes and 2 seconds) was unbeaten for 10 long years! He was regarded such a prized talent that he was not allowed to take part in wars fought by Indian army in both 1962 and 1965.

However, a land dispute in his village turned out to be his undoing. After his retirement from the army, he went to his village Morena, where he got into a land dispute with Babu Singh, who headed a very powerful family of 200 members. He even paid Rs. 3000 for his own land as decided by the panchayat; however, when his nephew retaliated, the collector promised to return the amount within 15 days. This angered Babu Singh, who broke into Pan Singh’s house and beat up his 95 year old mother.

Driven by emotions, he did what any son would do. He shot Babu Singh the next day out of frustration as well as anger. After that ensued a cat and mouse game, where Pan Singh used his strengths (running and shooting) to his advanatge as he managed to evade the administration and police. Finally, on October 1, 1981, he was shot dead after a 12 hour long enconter along with all his gang members.

The law failed a budding athlete and a retired patriotic soldier, and the same law ended labelling him a baghee (rebel).

Truly, the law is blind.

Yes, while his actions can be called criminal, he truly has my respect.
