The figures are misleading because in the initial stages of an epidemic large scale testing and compilation of results takes time. At the beginning of the virus in Wuhan it looked like the death rate was 15% – the deaths obviously show up and can hardly be hidden but the number of assay confirmed infections are slow to be revealed and mild cases are queued for tests which become backlogged. However in Wuhan by the time we had data on 44,000 confirmed cases the real fatality figure proved to be only about 0.8%
