I think there are two reasons, the least of which is that Sen. McCain frequently opposed Donald Trump, both during his presidency and well before.

The more important reason is that Pres. Trump saw in Sen. Mccain all of the things he is not. Sen. McCain was capable of admitting mistakes, apologizing, and working to remedy any damage or hurt he had caused. Sen. McCain had served in the military that Donald Trump escaped so cravenly and bragged about so faithlessly. Sen. McCain had made immeasurable sacrifices for public service, Pres. Trump has said himself that it is a great sacrifice to step away from the business he loves. [Pro hint: He hasn’t, has he?] Sen. McCain was quick to work with people across the aisle, knowing that everyone was trying to do the right thing for the nation they all loved. Pres. Trump sees opposition as disloyalty, assuming that his positions are to be obeyed or else. Sen. McCain was a man of honor; Pres. Trump’s ideas of honor come straight from the Cosa Nostra and The Godfather. Pres. Trump was disrespectful to Sen. McCain for the same reason he is disrespectful to so many — he simply cannot understand who they are.
