  1. Over 90% of the worlds nations have agreed not to develop nuclear weapons. Which is very good news. But Iran and North Korea risk greater proliferation in their regions. If the US and the USSR can not prevent nuclear proliferation in Iran then many other countries in the region will see the need to build their own weapons for self-defense.

And for every new nuclear power there is the increased risk of nuclear conflict. And if other countries have nuclear weapons they would not need Russia as an ally. Russia could lose power and influence if more countries become nuclear powers.

Currently, the nuclear club is very small. And they do not benefit from having new members. When Iran has nuclear warheads for its long-range missiles it will be able to threaten Russia and its allies. As well as increasing the risk of international nuclear conflict. Iran will have less need for its alliance with Russia or need to buy its weapons.

For example. North Korea now has nuclear weapons. And China and the US can do little about it. But other countries in the region are threatened by North Korea. Its leaders make numerous violent threats against its neighbors in the region. Those countries may now need to develop their own nuclear weapons for self-defense. So China faces the risk that Japan, South Korea and Taiwan may now seek to develop their own weapons. And China would be very unhappy to see Japan and Taiwan having nuclear weapons. They are both traditional enemies. Luckily the US protects South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. So they are not building nuclear bombs. Which they are very capable of doing.

The nuclear powers play a major role in preventing nuclear proliferation. Especially the US that has so many allies around the world. And many allies in the Middle East.

Russia is also a target for Islamic terrorism. And Iran could support Russian enemies in future. Russia is a convenient ally for Iran. But they are opposed in ideology. Russia is more pragmatic. But Iran has a radical Shiite government.
