  1. Do you ask why there is so much violence in history? Or do you sum up all of history as “violent”? Really depends on what you want to focus on…

    Perhaps it is because…

Violence is something that happens in real life and people need to know how to react to violence.

Rolling over and dying and turning the other cheek is not a solution when people attack you.

Outlining when military force is authorized and when to accept ceasefires and truces is a very important aspect for any nation.

Lets have a closer look at the violence in the chapter.

    9;4

Excepted are those with whom you made a treaty among the polytheists and then they have not been deficient toward you in anything or supported anyone against you; so complete for them their treaty until their term [has ended]. Indeed, Allah loves the righteous [who fear Him].

so the verse talks about people with whom you have a treaty and uphold their end of the bargain faithfully should have their truces honoured.

How about those that don’t? What about those that attack you as described?

    9;13

Would you not fight a people who broke their oaths and determined to expel the Messenger, and they had begun [the attack upon] you the first time? Do you fear them? But Allah has more right that you should fear Him, if you are [truly] believers.

Force is then authorized; But if they cease their hostilities, hostilities may be ended.

    9;5

And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

This is what is apparent without knowing when it was revealed, but simply by reading the chapter instead of reading each verse in a contextless void. There are verses speaking of violence and understanding the context of when it was revealed provides even greater insight as to the ‘why’ it was revealed.
