Ah! P.I.A. don’t we all just love it?

It reminds us of the ‘old days’. The Ayub Khan era. When it was among the most profitable air travel companies. When Pakistan was not a problem but a ‘model’ of industrial development.

That is why we are so attached to it. But, that time has passed. Today, P.I.A. is not an asset but rather a liability. It has become a white elephant. The crew to craft ratio is too high. So, the government has to take some tough decisions.

What many Pakistanis don’t understand is that privatization is not a bad thing. It is the right thing to do.

Here is a chart showing the financial performance of company since 2004. Take a look at the Profit/Loss column. For your information, a negative value is displayed enclosed in brackets as per accounting standards.

Notice much? The company has been making a loss continuously since 2005. On one hand, we want the Government to cut down on its expenditures. On the other hand we don’t want them to privatize unproductive sectors?

Please understand that the government is not evil. They are doing what ever they can to protect everyone’s interests. They have assured that no employees will lose their jobs. So, what is wrong? Common people. We need to improve our economy.
