Why the US is afraid of Iran?

I don’t think Americans are “afraid” of Iran: I think they (to the extent that they have much of an opinion on it) tend to regard it as a country with a regime which is hostile to the United States. Because the Iranian government has explicitly and continually stated that the United States is its enemy since the very beginning of the Islamic Republic, this is not a difficult belief to understand.
(Of course, the declaration by George W. Bush that Iran was part of an “Axis of Evil” probably influenced some part of the American population as well, but that was a moment. The Iranian regime’s declarations of its enmity have been persistent since long before Bush made that statement and continued long afterward.)
