SARS symptoms initially resemble a cold, which most people will take some cold medicine and go about their day. As symptoms worsen, they might consider they have the flu and stay home in bed. The longer they go without treatment and the further the disease progresses, the more likely they are to suffer dire consequences.

The deadliness comes from cytokine storm, which the immune system goes into overload and kills the body’s own cells. These storms can kill a person or cause lasting damage which may lead to death through malfunction of processes in the body that were affected by the cellular death.

Since the disease is viral with no vaccine, there is no “cure” for SARS. Only supportive treatment can be given and hope that the patient does not suffer a severe cytokine storm.
