Although the Argentinian team struggled in the qualifiers and the last result was very bad against Spain, I strongly believe that the TEAM can win the World Cup.

Messi alone won’t be able to win the tournament, the team needs to be solid and built to create synergies among the players; this is really the biggest challenge for Sampaoli. In the last 3 tournaments, the team has not been cohesive, and therefore Messi didn’t perform at the highest level; since football is a team’s sport, there’s a strong correlation between team and individual performances.

I just finished watching a documentary called “The Impossible Champion”. It talks about the 1986 World Cup, and how the Argentinian team lead by Maradona, one of the greatest players ever, won that tournament when nobody was expecting it. There’re many situations that were similar back then, like a very questioned and unpopular coach (Carlos Salvador Bilardo), struggle in the qualifiers (just like this time, for the 1986 cup they qualified on the last game), and a huge star (Diego Maradona) who had failed to perform in the 1982 world Cup.

This is in contrast with the euphoria and overconfidence the Argentinians had in 2002. Do you remember what happened? They couldn’t go through the first phase. This is one of the main examples I wrote in an answer about how the favorite teams have not been able to win the cup during at least the last 7 tournaments.
