  1. I grew up in Dubai but wouldn’t want to live there again.

It is racist, your salary depends on your race to some extent. A significant portion of the population is from the Indian subcontinent, and they’re paid less as compared to UAE nationals/whites.
There is widespread censorship (web sites are blocked for being against Islamic interests, media is controlled, only Government owned Internet/telecommunications companies exist.)
Women may enjoy more rights than certain other nations in the Middle East. However, cohabitation, premarital sex and abortion are all illegal and punishable offenses.
If home/rental allowances are offered as part of a compensation package, they are usually not available to women. Immigration laws are such that the criteria are relaxed for sponsoring the residence permit for a female spouse. The bar for sponsoring a male spouse is much higher. Unmarried women are considered dependents of their parents and can continue to be sponsored by them. Married women are considered dependents of their spouse and have their residence permits revoked on marriage. Men, on the other hand, are considered adults at 18 and cannot be sponsored by their parents. Being condescended to and treated like a child/dependent on a parent/husband (in the eyes of the law and otherwise) grates on my nerves.
